Description

Obtained with  #29 300 second light frames usingan L-Ultimate filter from a Bortle 6-7 area in Cincinnati, Ohio.

This is frequently imaged by just about everyone. Images abound.

The technical difficulties include the bright star Alnitak and subsequent artifacts.

"The Horsehead Nebula, also known as Barnard 33, and its companion, the Flame Nebula, sit near the star Alnitak in Orion’s Belt. Today, we know that the Horsehead is a dark, light-gobbling nebula made of cold gas and dust. And, as Barnard showed, this dark cloud’s signature shape is only visible because its silhouette obscures the light from the brighter nebula behind it."*

Despite several attempts to visually see the Horsehead, I have not.

Title: Wide FOV Flame and Horsehead

Description: This image was obtained with #29 300 second light frames using an L-Ultimate filter from a Bortle 6-7 area in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Horsehead Nebula, also known as Barnard 33, and its companion, the Flame Nebula, sit near the star Alnitak in Orion’s Belt. This signature shape is only visible because its silhouette obscures the light from the brighter nebula behind it.

Additional imaging time would have provided a better image, I suspect, but it has been a long and cloudy winter. Processing the image is complicated by the bright star Alnitak and I spent a bit of time dealing with this issue.
