Description

NGC 4449 is a barred spiral galaxy in a distance of 13 million light years in Canes Venatici.

The faint streak to the top of the galaxy is not an artefact but a low-surface-brightness companion galaxy with a large amount of dark matter. It's thought that the interaction between the two has led to the distortion of NGC 4449.
