Description

NGC 5383 is a barred spiral galaxy in Canes Venatici. Its distance from Earth is estimated to be 110,893,168 light years. This is a small target - only about 3 arc minutes .

Imaged over two nights - April 28th and 30th. Five minute LRGB the first night. Seven and a half minutes on the second night. Unfortunately, the moon limited the contrast in the extended spiral arms.....especially on night two. I may add some data around the new moon if I get a chance.

I used GHS fairly well to bring out the faint extended spiral arms. Color calibrated with SPCC and then saturation boosted. I also had to adjust the green and red. The extended spirals had a red cast that looked terrible with just the saturation boost. I used SCNR to reduce the green and curves for the red.

I couldn't find  the small galaxy below NGC 5383  cataloged. Anyone know a designation?

Randall

Update: I noticed some background mottling when I brought up this image on my desktop monitor. New revision has the black point pulled in on the histogram. What this really needs is a change in the processing. Sometimes, NoiseX seems to cause this if applied too early. If I get more data on this target, I will redo it.
