Description

This image is a two-panel mosaic of the Montes Alps region of the moon. Cutting through this range is the Vallis Alps lunar valley (visible at the top of the image) and Plato crater at the bottom. For this image I used my C8 SCT coupled with a 2x Barlow lens, resulting in a total focal length of approximately 4260 mm (when taking into account all other accessories.) I used a ZWO ASI 178MM camera, with gain setting of 170 (corresponding to unity gain) for this image. Data was acquired at a frame rate of 30 fps, the maximum for this camera when the ROI is not constrained. A total of 6000 frames were acquired for each panel, with the best 50% selected for stacking. Seeing and transparency were both quite good this evening, so while I used a Baader 610 nm high-pass filter for imaging, perhaps this wasn't needed.

In revision B, I compare Plato crater under different lighting conditions. The first image was obtained earlier in the year (Feb. 2020) with essentially the same equipment (with the exception that no filter was used) during approach to full moon. The second image is taken from the data collected for the mosaic above (using an IR 610 nm high-pass filter), during the waning gibbous phase. It is interesting to see how the change in lighting alters how one perceives some of the different features of the lunar surface.

It looks like winter weather is on its way into the Bay Area this weekend, so I was glad I had enough energy for a mid-week observing session!
