Description

I decided to attempt capturing the recent supernova, 2020oi, in the core of M100 back in February and finally got around to processing the data this week, adding an extra image I captured in March. It turned out to be fairly tricky to identify the SN in the image because there are so many bright knots around the the core of the galaxy where the the supernova blew. Its hard to find reference or survey images that show this region without over exposure, making identification difficult. The HST image is so detailed, the opposite problem occurs in trying to match my fuzzy image with the crisp structures in the HST image! The filter used in the discovery image fromthe zwicky transient facility seemed to selectively filter out the bright knots and just show the SN, so without the knots, I couldn't orient that image with mine. The previous supernova in M100 back in May 2019, 2019ehk, was much easier to spot as it was well away from other bright knots in the galaxy and just showed up as an orange star. The 2019 SN has long since vanished and cannot be seen in this image.

I've included an annotated version with an enlargement of the core as the C revision to mark the location of the SN in the core amongst the crowd of O-B associations mixed in with HII regions. An asteroid that passed through in during imaging is also marked in the upper right corner. A video of the asteroid's motion can be seen here:

Weather, few nights of good seeing and poor timing of passes of M100 through the slot of sky visible in my backyard all conspired to limit what I could capture to only 48 minutes of data (6 x 8 minute subs, with each 8 minute sub a live stack of 240 two second exposures using SharpCap). Sure would have liked to have at least double that . The dust lanes in the outer regions of the galaxy were just starting to make their appearance in the data. Suburban astronomy can sometimes be really frustrating.
