Description

NGC2440 is a planetary nebula in the constellation of Puppis. The progenitor star is considered to be one of the hottest white dwarf stars known, with an estimated temperature of 219,000 degrees Kelvin. While the star itself cannot be seen in this image due to a dense central concentration of material, the nebula itself reveals a distinctive bipolar shape which formed as the dying star shed material at different times and directions.

It was originally discovered by William Herschel in 1790 and is approx 4000 light years away and 1.6 light years across.
