Description

This spiral galaxy is located 50 million light years away in the constellation of Virgo at a declination of -17 degrees.  It is a magnitude 10.9 galaxy which spans 5 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 70,000 light years.

From our view perspective, the disk is inclined about halfway between face-on and edge-on.

The arm structure of this galaxy is fascinating. It is one of the best examples of galaxies which appear to have 3 arms.  My collection of 3 armed galaxies is shown here.  Something is disturbing this disk – the pair of bright regions at 7 o'clock look suspicious and could be merger remnants.

I love the 5 surrounding distant edge-on galaxies, particular the galaxy just above and behind NGC 5054, which is LEDA 46256.  This galaxy is twice as far away as NGC 5054.
