The cloud is located in the western part of the constellation, in a very rich field of background stars, surrounding the bright giant star 12 Geminorum , of apparent magnitude equal to 6.95. The identification of its location is not difficult, thanks to the presence of the brilliant μ Geminorum , a red giant star of magnitude 2.87 and therefore clearly visible even in the nights are not perfectly clear, the nebula is located about a degree to the northwest, on the edge of an open cluster known as widely dispersed Cr 89 . vdB 75 is the brightest part of the nebula IC 444, which is in turn associated with an emission nebula indicated with the abbreviation Sh2-249 ; this nebula is part of the H II region BFS51, located in the central regions of the Complex hazy molecular Gemini OB1 , a vast association of stars and diffuse nebulae placed at nearly 2000 parsecs away from the solar system , the inner edge of the Perseus Arm .
