Description

IC 2087 is a small reflection nebula located 500 light years away in the constellation of Taurus at a declination of +26 degrees.  It spans 6 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a width of 1 light year.

The darkness in the image is caused by a large patch of dark nebulosity, Barnard 22.  An unseen star, hidden by dust, is illuminating the colorful nebula.  I find it unusual that a reflection nebula is this colorful.
