Description

My first attempt at this gorgeous galaxy this season. It’s been several years since I last imaged this, and the new gear, software and a tad more experience have made a difference. It filled the field of view of my Nikon D7000 DSLR and 80mm scope, but with careful tilting of the scope I was able to get it all in there. I’ll be collecting more data over the next two months and will then develop a final image which will be, hopefully, pretty decent!

This galaxy looks very similar to how our own Milky Way galaxy would look from the same distance, which is about 2.5 million light years away. Actually, this galaxy is naked-eye visible from darker skies, and if the human eye could detect it completely, it would appear 5-6 moon-lengths in size! Another interesting tidbit is that this galaxy is on a collision course with the Milky Way, expected to “touch” in about 4.5 billion years from now!
