Description

This was my first attempt at SHO imaging using a combination of H-alpha, O-III, and S-II filters. For this I mounted my QHY 163M camera to a Samyang 135 mm lens set to f/2.8. This was then attached to the back of my C8 telescope. Settings for the camera were gain: 170, offset: 40. Each collected 90 minutes of data on each filter, using 120 s subs. I acquired the data on three consecutive nights. The camera includes a Peltier cooler, which allowed the sensor temperature to be maintained at -10 C.

Having focused on planetary imaging over the summer, it was nice to do some deep sky work. It took quite a few iterations to get everything correct with this new setup. In addition, we had severe fires over the last two months in Northern California, which made transparency terrible for an extended period of time. Even with the narrow-band filters, I still encountered some gradients in the background that were difficult to remove (likely from the severe light pollution in my area.) The 135 mm lens provides such a wide field is is fairly forgiving when it comes to tracking errors. It was also enjoyable to learn how to do processing of SHO images.
