Description

This nebula is an H-II region being ionized by the intense UV radiation emitted from the Wolf-Rayet star,
EZ Canis Majoris, located near its centre. The hydrogen has been emitted by this star as it slowly
degenerates into a supernova explosion as it nears the end of its life. The spectrum of this star shows
that it is devoid of hydrogen in its outer layers. The ejected hydrogen expanded outwards forming the
“bubble-like” envelope as it collided with slower moving gas released from previous ejections.

The nebula lies 4,530 ly away, and is 60ly in diameter at its widest. It can be found about 8-deg south
of Sirius, but is quite faint and thus is a challenge to be viewed with normal telescopes. It becomes more
apparent with an appropriate filter. It is estimated that this nebula was formed around 70,000 years ago,
and the ejected hydrogen is moving at some 1,700 km/sec.

The very bright star at lower right (south-west) “corner” of the nebula is omicron-1 Canis Majoris, one of
the stars makiing up Canis Major’s constellation figure. It lies in the “Dog’s” under-belly, between Adhara
and Mirzam at the rear and front feet, respectively.
