Description

The cocoon nebula is an emission/reflection nebula with active star generation. It’s size is about 10 light years. The bright stars within it form the open cluster Collinder 470 and are responsible for the ionization of the nebula. The blue reflection nebula to the lower right is vdB 146. The dark clouds are the very tip of Barnard 168. Together, these nebulae are part of a big molecular cloud filling this region.

This is an integration of the full LRGBHa stack. I like all the dust in this area and how it seems as if the cocoon is moving through it.

The Ha is only blended into the red channel but really improves the local contrast in the main part of the cocoon. First time I tried the continuum subtraction method, I'm sure I'll use it more often.
