Description

The Sadr region in the summer constellation of Cygnus.

I wanted to capture a mosaic that would stretch from the Butterfly Nebula in the lower left, to the Tulip Nebula in the upper right.
Once I had finished my first edit and took the time to really look at this image, I was struck by something that (to me) was very beautiful.
In this tiny section of our milky way galaxy is contained, all at once, the various stages and cycles that make up the life of a star.

We have massive clouds of Hydrogen gas that eventually coalesce into bright star-forming regions, such as the area around Sadr. Then there are relatively young star clusters, such as Messier 29... followed by the spectacular Crescent Nebula, formed by the fast stellar wind from an extremely hot and rare Wolf-Rayet star,  interacting with material that it ejected when it transformed into a red giant. Finally, just to the right of the beautiful Tulip nebula is the binary X-ray system of Cygnus X-1. This group includes a blue supergiant and an invisible companion 14.8 times the mass of the Sun. The companion is, of course, a black hole.

Entire worlds being born, growing and dying, all across these few pixels that I've captured. It's a very humbling thought.

Most of the compilation was captured in early June 2021 under Bortle 8 skies, but weather and wild-fire smoke prevented me from finishng the lastpanel until mid-July.
