Description

From late June to early August, I was able to squeeze five nights of imaging in for the veil nebula. I had a feeling this one would be tough to gather sufficient light on in my Bortle 8/9 backyard, and I wasn't wrong. But despite the resulting stacked image being quite noisy, there was a lot of really interesting detail and it was really neat to work with.

I discovered, during my imaging sessions for this target, that my previous standard 6-minute exposure for my DSLR, L-eXtreme filter and f/5.9 OTA was no longer sufficient to adequately expose the red channel. I guess all my previous targets were shot in hazy, moonlit conditions and likely nowhere near the meridian. I had to bump up my exposures to 10-12 minutes and I was still underexposed for red. The Skyguider Pro handled it like a champ, though, and despite large saturated stars, they were ultimately pretty round.

I split the image into Ha & OIII, and did a separate stretch of the stars. No RGB stars for this target, but they turned out alright. I could have gathered a lot more time on this, but I think I'll wait until I've got a cooled camera to try it again next summer in my new Bortle 7 backyard. This will have to do for now!
