Description

This image captures 2 galaxy groups, Abell 2197 (top) and Abell 2199 (bottom), located in the constellation of Hercules at a declination of +40 degrees.

Each of the 2 clusters contains about 80 galaxies and is located about 420 million light years away. The starless mouseover image shows only the galaxies in this 3 degree wide FOV, which corresponds to an actual image width of 20 million light years.

I processed this image, viewed it a few minutes, and then dumped it in my “no good” delete bin.  I just wasn't very impressed by it.  But the next day I dug it out again and examined the annotated image in full resolution, and then processed a starless version.  I started to appreciate all of the different galaxies on display here so I decided to post it.

The largest and brightest galaxy in the frame is NGC 6166, a magnitude 12 elliptical (E4) with a massive outer diameter of over 300,000 light years located in the lower middle portion of the image. Recent studies have identified 50,000 globular clusters in this galaxy, the most identified in any galaxy so far.  My favorite part of the image is the interesting collection of galaxies just above and left of NGC 6166.
