Description

I recorded this image on the same night as ngc 4290 which I showed earlier. It was by far the best night of the year and even then it clouded over at 2-30am. So I got around 60 x 60sec exposures of this pretty galaxy - which I originally thought was an Arp galaxy! It is so similar to M51 and other Arp's with an attached companion that I mistakenly thought this was an Arp. However, it's not in the atlas but I still think it's an interesting interaction.

In fact ngc 3893 is a small spiral classified as SBc and ngc 3896 at about 2-o-clock in my image is classifies SBa/P and is interacting with ngc 3893. Distance is about 56 Mly. ngc 3893 is bright, mag 10.6 and measures 5' x 3' in the sky. ngc 3896 is a bit fainter, mag. 13.7 and a bit smaller 1.7' x 1.3' but even so is a fairly easy target. I can actually see no hint of any interaction or connection between the 2 galaxies.

There any many other faint and very distant galaxies in the frame and the mind boggles how far away these are.
