Just on the boundary of Leo lies the attractive spiral galaxy ngc 2903, inexplicably missed by Messier when compiling his catalogue of comet-like objects. This galaxy in pretty bright, magnitude 8.9, is large 13' x 7' and being almost face-on to our line of sight presents an interesting target for the imager. NGC 2903 is classified SBbc with a fairly high Surface brightness 12.3. It is a starburst galaxy with a large halo of hot gasses. It is around 20 million light years distance, so is one of the nearer bright galaxies.

I took this image in March and have spent quite a long time playing around with various methods of combining the individual colour converted images. I had a very high amount of background noise, possibly a result of somewhat indifferent seeing we experienced around this time. I present 2 versions of the same data; one processed using sum combine the other using sigma reject combine. Sigma reject has the wonderful effect of completely rejecting hot pixels in the images and is, in theory, supposed to yield a higher S/N ratio than a simple addition (or average, I believe)

There is no doubting the elimination of hot pixels and that is a bonus. Not so sure about the increase S/N, I think the technique probably needs somewhat better data than my imaging setup can deliver at present. The exposure is just 40 mins through my 10" Newtonian / SXH9C combiation. Thin cloud and low contrast spoilt a lot of the raw images.
