Description

I have a special interest in 'Ring' galaxies. About one fifth of all spirals are ring galaxies and a further third have broken or partial ring patterns. These rings are formed as a direct consequence of the internal dynamics and evolution of spiral galaxies and are particularly associated with bars and other non-symmetrical pertubations within the galaxy disc. Also, rings are usually sites of current active star formation and in some galaxies star formation only takes place in the 'ring'. A small number of 'ring' galaxies are the result of galaxy collisions but the vast majority of 'rings' are formed by resonance between the motions of dust and gas in the disc and a rotating 'bar' within the galaxy.

Although 'ring' galaxies are, therefore, a natural phenonemon, there are some anomalies. For example, not all barred galaxies form 'rings' and there are also rings in some non-barred galaxies.Another type of 'ring' galaxy is ngc 7217 in Pegasus, which although of mag. 11 and 4' x 3', I found harder than 6632. 7217 has an outer low-surface brightness ring, where star formation is ongoing and a smaller dust ring, near to the centre and not visible in my image. This one probably formed a ring following a merger with another galaxy.
