Description

This is an image I took a few weeks back. The night was good and I decided my target would be Arp 6, ngc 2537 the 'Bear Paw Galaxy'

which is to be found not for from the Great Bear. NGC 2537 and it's close companian, ngc 2537a are well placed for observation at present and here is my attempt to capture the pair.

Lying in the constellation of Lynx, a rich hunting ground for galaxy hunters, ngc 2537 is actually quite a bright though rather small target. At magn. 11.7 and having an apparent size of 1.8' x 1.5' it is just visible through my 10". NGC 2537a is the small 'star' shaped galaxy to the left of the 'Bear Paw'. This is faint at mag. 16.1 and a tiny 0.7'x 0.7'.

The pair are designated as Arp 6 in Arp's catalogue, spiral galaxies with low surface brightness. I must say there are much fainter spiral galaxies to be found.

While setting up and framing I noticed that at the edge of the field was a rather nice edge-on spiral. A little jigging got both galaxies just into the field of view of my camera.

I took 50 x 2 min exposures and set about finding out about the edge-on galaxy. It is in fact IC 2233 and at mag. 13.0 it is reasonably bright. About 5' x 0.5' in size and it makes a nice contrast to the rather odd looking 'Bear Paw'.
