Description

NGC 5033 is a well known, quite faint Seyfert Galaxy which is not easy to image. The 'spidery' arms have very low surface brightness and require good skies and long exposures. NGC 5033 lies in the constellation of Canes Venatici. It is a very low luminosity Seyfert Galaxy and has a large neighbour NGC 5005 lurking not far away, less than 1 degree. The 2 galaxies have probably interacted in the past and this may have caused the apparent warping of the spiral arms of 5033. Also 5033 has 2 distinct nuclei, an optical nucleus and the Seyfert nucleus, which are about 3arcsec apart. NGC 5033 is mag. 10, with an average surface brightness of 14.2 magnitude per square arcmin.

This image taken on 11th April, sky conditions were good and the galaxy was high in the sky, about 75deg. high, in fact. 35 x 3 minute exposures through the 10" Newtonian/H9C combination.

All very best,

David.

PS: Most of the streetlights in Weymouth now go out at 1am BST. This is a good step but, as expected there was a lot of resistance. Difficult to say if it makes much difference yet, I'm usually just about ready to pack up for the night when they go out!
