Description

There are a great many beautiful and interesting galaxies to be seen in the constellation of Pegasus.

NGC 7814 is a stunning, almost perfectly edge-on spiral, which has the benefit of being located in a most beautiful field of view. There are countless background galaxies, most very faint, many below mag. 20. I particularly like the faint semi-circular chain just to the left of the 2 bright stars at bottom right of the frame.

About 30 MLy distant, ngc 7814 is magnitude 10.5 and measures 5' x 2.5' in angular size. It is classified as a type Sab galaxy.

It is quite possible that NGC 7814 has around 500 globular clusters associated with it, if this is the case then this is the largest known globular cluster density for spiral galaxies. Globular cluster formation mechanisms are not really well understood, although they must have a significant influence on galactic evolution.

As far as I know there are no globulars visible in my image, which is not altogether that surprising.

Taken on a rare but brief clear night in September, this image is the sum of only 25 x 3 minutes exposures, before an unexpected cloud bank rolled in! I would have liked more time on this one because it is of fairly low altitude at best.
