Description

Tucked away in Leo are a number of well known multiple galaxy groups. The one

presented here is Hickson 44, otherwise known as Arp 316, or even the NGC 3190

Galaxy Group.

There is a slight cautionary tale to be told here. I had been noticing that my

main mirror had been getting increasingly 'dirty'. I am a little allergic to

removing the mirror and cleaning it for obvious reasons and put it off, and off,

and off! Well we get very damp conditions here in Weymouth and dust and dirt

makes very handy condensation sites for moisture. After I'd finished this

imaging session I had a quick peek at the state of the mirror. Horror upon

horror, the whole thing was awash with moisture and every sort of muck

imaginable. I've no idea how the image turned out this well actually. Anyway, I

straight away removed the main mirror, took it indoors and dried it out. Next

day I very carefully washed it off and dried it thoughourly, before storing it

away in a nice dry airing cupboard. It looks fine but I haven't put it back in

yet and am thinking how to insulate my ota. I think a layer of felt wrapped

around the bottom end may help. Any ideas anyone?

NGC 3190 is the mag. 12.1 SA(S)a pec. spiral in the centre and shows a nice dust

lane. NGC 3187 is the bluish mag. 13.9 SB(s)c pec spiral and ngc 3193 is the

mag. 11.8 Elliptical. The galaxy at the bottom is ngc 3185 and there are a

number of other very faint smudges lurking which I am unable to identify.
