Description

Finally got my mirror cleaned, back in the tube and collimated. The night of 20th March showed some promise, just a few clouds scudding past - no moon, ideal for a trial on M64, which I've not previously imaged with my H9C camera.

M64 was recently shown to have two counter-rotating systems of stars and gas in its disk: The inner part is about 6,000 light years across and is rubbing along the inner edge of the outer disk, which rotates in the opposite direction and extends to at least 40,000 light years. The peculiar internal motions of M64 are thought to be the result of a collision between a small galaxy and a large galaxy, which has not reached equilibrium yet.

M64 is classified a SB type galaxy. Distance estimates vary from 12 mly to 44 mly. Image acquired and processed with Astroart 3 through my 10" reflector / H9C ccd camera - 51 minutes exposure (17x3mins)
