White dwarf stars are dead stars which, when they die, throw off their outer atmosphere thus creating a planetary nebula and retaining the heavy elements, formed during their lifetimes, in their cores. Some white dwarf stars appear to be variable but this is not because the star is actually varying in output but because the central star is a hybrid PG 1159 type object. NGC 7094 a very faint planetary nebula in Pegasus and it's central star is a hybrid PG 1159 type white dwarf which has some unusual and surprising qualities. NGC 7094 is an unstable object that may be at an evolutionary stage where the star is changing from a PG 1159 type to the beginning of its white dwarf cooling sequence. The star may experience periodic pulsation events due to the partial ionization of Carbon and Oxygen in the stars atmosphere, which causes it's atmosphere to become temporarily opaque and gives the appearence of variability. NGC 7094 may, therefore, be at a short but critical phase in it's evolution.

Whatever is going on it is a very difficult amateur object, at least I found it so. Despite a pretty good night and some decent 5 minute subs, I could not be sure I could see the nebula at all on the individual exposures. Summing helped but still a pretty faint image resulted. Magnitude 13.4, surface brightness 14.1 mags. per square arcmin. Size 99" x 91".
