Description

Tucked away in the heart of Cassiopeia is the dwarf irregular galaxy IC 10. IC 10 is about 2.2 million light years away and is an outlying member of our local group of galaxies.

IC 10 has a large population of newly formed stars and is in fact the only known starburst galaxy in the local group. In my image the green regions are older stars whilst the redder areas are areas of active star formation.

The galaxy is currently producing stars at the rate of around 0.04-0.08 solar masses per year, this indicates that the gas supply in the galaxy can only last for a few billion years.

Surrounding the galaxy is a huge envelope of hydrogen, much larger than the apparent view of the galaxy in visible light. Interestingly the visible part of IC10 rotates in the opposite direction to the hydrogen envelope.

The black hole within IC 10 is orbited by a companion which passes in front of the black hole. By observing the dimming of X-rays emitted from the black hole the orbit of the companion and the mass of the black hole have been determined. It has been found that the stellar black hole is the most massive known black hole with a mass of 24-33 times the mass of the sun.

Because these black holes are formed as a star dies, most of the mass of the star is thrown off before the black hole forms. It is therefore most unusual for a black hole to retain so much mass, one theory is that the galaxy is lacking in heavy elements which allows large black holes to form.

Although quite close to us IC 10 is not an easy subject to image. It lies near the plane of the milky way and it’s light is obscured by interstellar matter. My image consists of 40 x 3 minute exposures through my 10” reflector using the SX H9C to capture the photons.
