Description

Here's another little galaxy group in Leo, known as Copeland's Septet.

None of the members of this group were visible through my 10" Newtonian visually but the 2 minute subs showed some detail and all of the various galaxies.

Halton Arp found some interesting features within this interacting group but there are no cosmological conclusions to be drawn as far as I can ascertain.

My image the sum of 45 x 2 minute exposures. Below the main group can be seen numerous very faint, unidentifiable, galaxies.

The Hickson 57 group is estimated to be about 480 MLy distant and the table below summarises the main features of the group.

ngc 3753 (Hickson 57a), size 1.7' x 0.5', mag. 13.6, type Spiral

ngc 3746 (Hickson 57b), size 1.1' x 0.5', mag. 14.2, type Barred Spiral, inner ring

ngc 3750 (Hickson 57c), size 0.8' x 0.7', mag. 13.9, type Lenticular

ngc 3754 (Hickson 57d), size 0.4' x 0.3', mag. 14.3, type Barred Spiral

ngc 3748 (Hickson 57e), size 0.7' x 0.4', mag. 14.8, type Edge on Lenticular or spiral

ngc 3751 (Hickson 57f), size 0.8' x 0.5', mag. 13.9, type Barred Spiral

ngc 3745 (Hickson 57g), size 0.4' x 0.2', mag. 15.2, type Barred Spiral
