Description

This little galaxy is a bit of an anomoly. You might think by looking at the image that Dr. Arp would have placed this in the 'low surface brightness companion' group but instead we find it in the 'one - armed spiral' group. Dr. Arp appears to show no interest in the companion, which clearly does look connected in my image. NGC 3445 is mag. 12.4, whereas the companion, mcg +10-16-024, is mag. 15.7. The faint anonymous companion between NGC 3445 and the bright star is mag. 17.2. The redshift of ngc 3445 indicates a distance of 103 MLy whereas the redshift of mcg +10-16-024 indicates a distance of only 88MLy. As there is obviously a connection between the 2 galaxies it is strange that Halton Arp should have not picked up on this, as the separation between the 2 galaxies is quite large. The other little galaxy just to the left of NGC 3445 is estimated to be 600 -700 MLy away so there is no question of any interaction here.

At the top of the image, the edge-on spiral is NGC 3440 which may be a member of the group - it is estimated at 100MLy distant.

My image, taken a few weeks back, is the sum of 45 x 120 sec exposures, autoguided, through my 10" f4.8 Newtonian.
