Description

La galaxie NGC6946 dans Céphée. Image LRGB de 165, 25, 25, 37mn, Télescope Meade LX200 ACF de 2500mm de focale et ccd CP8-MS. Cette spirale à 4 bras possède de nombreuses condensations correspondant à des régions de formation d'étoiles. Elle est distante de 12.25 millions d'années lumière et on y a détecté pas moins de 9 supernovæ depuis le début du XXe siècle;

Galaxy NGC6946 in Cepheus. This is a large and bright four-branch spiral galaxy with a small, brighter core obscured somewhat by a dust patch. Four spiral arms are distincly seen; they are marked by many condensations indicating star clusters or star forming regions. Owing to the galaxy low galactic latitude, considerable light absorption by dust in the plane of Milky Way may be dimming the galaxy. There have been a large number of supernovæ in this galaxy over the years (1917, 1939, 1948, 1968, 1969, 1980, 2002, 2004, 2008). With a distance of 12.25 mly., it is one of the nearest galaxies of theLocal Group. Angular size 11.5'x10.0', dimeter 40 500 ly.
