With the popularity of C/2021 A1 (Leonard) I figured I would give it a shot. Unfortunately, it never rises from behind a tree to the east of my mount. But I found another that does and gave it a whirl!

67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko was 0.43 AU from Earth at the time this was taken, approximately mag 8.9. It has an orbital period of 6.45 years, a frequent visitor of our Sun.

As a bonus, asteroid 68 Leto was in the frame when I was shooting the comet! 68 Leto is a mag 12 large main belt asteroid that is likely a stony silicate composition. It orbits the Sun every 4.64 years and was 2.33 AU from Earth when I took this image.

Processing the comet is unlike anything I've processed so far. Having to deal with something that is moving is tough. And this one is moving slowly which wreaks havoc with rejection of stars and leftover star bits. But I figured out something workable and produced a comet image. Then I realized I got asteroid 68 Leto as well. Two firsts! Had to go back and process that, which thankfully is an easier moving object (no tail) and I'd learned all the tools needed while processing the comet.

The stars and 68 Leto are from the full data set. The comet processing was best if I used only one sub every filter change, which was 4.5 minutes. Next time I'll have a better strategy or go with OSC.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
