Description

These photogenic galaxies are located in the constellation of Bootes at a declination of +49 degrees.  Like many visually close galaxies in our heavens, these 4 are locate at different distances from each other and are simply superimposed from our view perspective.

My favorite at top center is NGC 5689, a large magnitude 12.5 edge-on spiral galaxy, located 120 million light years away.  It spans 4 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 140,000 light years. I love the dual mid-line dust bands, the bright glowing core, and the warped disk.

At lower left is NGC 5693, a face-on barred spiral galaxy with a single strong arm.  Note the blue star formation occurring in this arm.  Something is disturbing this galaxy.  It is close to NGC 5689, at 125 million light years away, but I do not sense that they are interacting.

At right are 2 beautiful and colorful grand design spiral galaxies.  The yellow barred face-on galaxy (NGC 5683) is 0.5 billion light years away.   The blue warped near edge-on galaxy (NGC 5682) is much closer at 105 million light years away.
