Description

NGC 2419 was nicknamed the "Intergalactic Wanderer" when it was erroneously thought by Harlow Shapely to be unbound to the Milky Way or any other galaxy.  Its orbit takes it further way from the galactic center than the Magellanic Clouds.  It was discovered by William Herschel in 1788 and is located about 300000 light years away in Lynx.  NGC 2419 is one of the most massive globular clusters of our galaxy and is made up of two separate populations of red giant stars - one of which is unusually helium rich.
