Description

The crescent nebula lies ~5,000 LY away in Cygnus, and formed from stellar winds and radiation, emitted by the powerful Wolf-Rayat star, which is clearly visible at the centre of the nebula. This is a complex structure made up of bubbles of ionised hydrogen and a shockwave of OIII.

A work in progress, here we have data from my DSI III Pro monochrome CCD camera using a 7nm hydrogen alpha filter.  I will add to this with some longer exposures and also OIII once darker skies return.

I’m impressed how sensitive this old CCD camera is (Sony ICX285AL sensor). The revision is a 5m image of the ring nebula, M57 (2.3 kLY) using 10s unguided exposures. The central star and little detail in the main ring, are clearly visible, as well a hint of IC 1296 (240mLY).

Calibrated with darks, no flats, aligned and stacked in Nebulosity and processed in Siril using my new workflow (star removal with Starnet, Astro sharpening of the DSO, using George Lowry’s Astrosharp, recomposition and finishing in Siril).

Title: M57 - 50 x 10s expsoures

Description: 5m Luminance filter using my DSI 3Pro mono camera. I'm amazed how sensitive this camera is, with just 10s exposures, even IC 1296 is just about visible ~240 million LY in 10 seconds !?! M57 ~2300 LY
