Description

Dark clouds of gas and dust are silhouetted against the glowing hydrogen gas of emission nebula IC1396 in the constellation Cepheus. The Elephant's Trunk Nebula is the horizontal dark region in the bottom right. Stellar winds and ultraviolet light from a hot, young star above the trunk are compressing the gas and dust and triggering new star formation in its depths. The stellar winds are eroding the less-dense gas and dust, leaving the "elephant trunk" behind it.

Description: Carefully adjusting RGB channels to get the color where I think it should be. Most of the data sits in the Red channel so manual channel manipulation took place. Used Lightness masks to boost luminance to bring out more nebulosity! We are always learning in this hobby!
