Description

Sh2-247 in Gemini

Sh2-247 doesn't look very spectacular. The nebula is roundish and diffusely fades into the background. Only in the northeast does the intergalactic medium appear to be significantly denser, because the exciting star can no longer ionize the hydrogen gas there, and a sharply defined ionization front has formed.

The star that makes the nebula glow is the brighter star slightly to the left of the nebula's center. It belongs to the Gemini OB1 association and has spectral class B0 III. Distance of about 7000 light years.
