Description

Lucky to have some clear skies in late January and early February, albeit with a nearly full Moon, I was actually targetting the Rosette, the Christmas Tree and Thor's Helmet. But because of my imaging windows, it turned out that I could spend more time on this than some of the "real" targets.

I was doing several other things as well--trying various things to improve the guiding performance of my CGEM ( I know, I know) among others. The issue with the objective of the AP is also in this image, but not horrible.

I processed this OSC image as an RGB image through DBE, then extracted the channels, keeping Red for Ha, and mixing the Oiii as 0.6 Blue plus 0.4 Green. I then processed each of these two to a "final" image stage of deconvolution and linear denoiseing with EZ scripts, stretched, ACDNR, and sharpening with MLT and LHE. I tried both a "red" version and an "orange" version a la Jon Rista blending the two and worked on colour saturation and contrast to finish. I think I like this orange-ish version better than the redder one, which is why I am putting it up. Final touch was a round of EZ star reduction. Thank you DarkArchon--it sure speeds up the process. Now if only I could speed up Starnet++ on my Mac...

Should I follow a different workflow? What I have described seems to produce a reasonable quality image, but I would be game to try something different . I would really like to get a "richer" blue but I can't seem to get there, or at least the way I am trying isn't working without getting 'way too blue overall. Just more signal?

Description: Learned a few new good things to help bring out the Oiii, better chrominance noise reduction and using a luminance layer for improving detail. Probably not doing any of it the "right" way, but I think there is an incremental improvement for my tastes anyway. Next trick will be merging HOO nebula with RGB stars--more reading, sleuthing and experimenting ahead!
