Description

The horns of Kies A - A Devilish Lunar Crater

Kies is the remnant of a lunarimpact crater that has been flooded by basalticlava, leaving only a remnant of the outer rim. It was named after German mathematician and astronomer Johann Kies. It is located in the Mare Nubium almost due south of the crater Bullialdus. Northwest of Kies is König. To the south-southwest lies a lunar dome structure designated Kies Pi

A little to the south is the smaller crater Kies A. At lunar sun dawn, it gives off two shadows that look like two horns, giving it a devilish look. This phenomenon only lasts for a couple of hours and is a rare sight to be captured.

As this is a relatively small area, I captured this with the barlow 3x on the C8. I didn't want to crop the image too much, as I wanted to preserve most of the surroundings, so there are a two small jagged corners to the images.

Any constructive guidance is welcome .. always looking how I can still improve on this

With thanks to the “Hemelkalendar 2023” from the “VVS - Vereniging Voor Sterrenkunde” (ie. The local astronomical society), for so graciously giving the details on this in their calendar … a must have
