Description

Back to the circa Bortle 6 skies of the city.  Figured it was time for my first attempt at capturing and processing narrowband data.

With the Prawn Nebula viewable for most of the night at the moment, I decided to give myself a good chance of producing something I'd be happy with, so captured a lot of data.  With my RedCat51 running at f/4.9, I think I've got about the right amount of data to really bring out the oxygen 'pool' my prawn is swimming in!  The H-alpha channel was by far the strongest but I was also pleasantly surprised by the strength of the SII.  The SII is great at better defining the prawn as the strength of the Ha was washing it out a little.

A lot of my early data was captured under a very full moon and it created a strong gradient in the OIII data, combined with meridian flips, the gradient was just getting worse.  Thankfull graXpert made quick work of that problem.  AutomaticBackgroundExtractor worked a treat on the other channels. Finding a colour combination I was comfortable with was also testing.  I felt I particularly struggled with getting a blue I was ok with for the oxygen 'pool'. Many of my early attempts produced a very strong cyan. What I discovered worked for me, by trial and error, was to apply a 2nd luminance layer using the SII data after the 1st Ha based luminance.  I'm much happier with it now.

Note: Depending on your viewing screen, you may prefer the slight differences in blacks and colour saturations in either the original or Revision H.  Personally I like the 'slightly' more muted and lower black point of the Original for the widefield and the higher contrast, more saturated Lightroom version for the closer in, widescreen aspect (Revision I).
