Description

The Leo Triplet is a group of galaxies located at 35 million light-years in the constellation of Leo. Its members are three spiral galaxies: M65 (upper left side), M66 (upper right side), and NGC 3628 (bottom ). On the bottom-right corner of NGC 3628 there is a small smudge of light. It is a tale of stars being ejected from the galaxy, due to gravitational interactions with its neighbors in the group. It spans 300,000 light years.

This picture was taken from the Hacienda Los Andes, región de Coquimbo, Chile. This is the astrotourism project of the outstanding Belgian astrophotographer Daniel Verschatse, who decided to live in Chile and take advantage of its world’s best night skies to build his dream observatory. I had the privilege of spending three incredible nights at this place taking photos of the sky.
