Description

From where I live in the southern hemisphere, M31 rises over the northern horizon and gives me maybe an hour of useful imaging time before it goes behind trees. It's breaking all the rules for me to be attempting Andromeda due to so much atmosphere between me and the target, but thought I'd give it a go last November. After throwing out bad frames and dithering I managed to get only 35 x 60s light frames, and have done a quick stretch and stack - and was happy to see some kind of detail in the dust lanes etc. Definitely want to capture some more sub frames on this amazing target to improve the signal to noise ratio. Northern Hemisphere imagers are so lucky to have this.

But it also makes me think, anyone in the Northern Hemisphere should try imaging the Carina Nebula if it gets far enough above your southern horizon (which it will soon)! Like Andromeda, it's a huge and bright target.

Astrofckup: I took this with the f/9 Skywatcher ED100 which is very very slow for astro, I'll give it another go next year with a faster scope (f/5.9 apo).
