Description

Here's one I really can't get very easily at home. I only had two nights with it under a dark sky, and it's a bit early in the season for Orion. But I'll take it. It's one I've wanted to get a decent shot of since I started doing astrophotography lo these three years ago.

I captured this data at the Nightfall Star Party in Borrego Springs, California the last couple of nights in October. This was my first star party. We drove the RV three days to get there and three days to get back. My motivation for going was to see Ron Brecher, my one-on-one astrophotography teacher for the last two years, deliver the keynote and finally get to meet him in person. Unfortunately, Ron had a mild heart attack (he's going to be fine) a couple of weeks before the event, so he was unable to attend. But any excuse to load the telescopes into the RV and go somewhere dark is enough for me.

Description: I missed uploading this when it happened, but it was very nice for AAPOD2 to recognize this picture. It's not easy lugging a C11 and a 10u GM1000 3,000 miles!

Title: Super Luminance, Among Other Things

Description: Recently, Ron Brecher taught me a stunning technique for enhancing the luminance channel of an LRGB image by stacking the R, G, B, and L masters together to create a "super luminance" master. While it still works great on images with a good deal of integration time, it's extremely helpful on images like this one that are captured over only one or two nights on a dark-sky trip. Typically, I see around at 10% boost in SNR using this technique, but on this image, it was closer to 20%. That makes a very big difference--especially in the darker, dustier areas of the image. But overall, it really helps smooth out the noise.
