Description

This is the Rosette Nebula, a large, dense cloud that is studded with new stars being formed, many near the tips of the dark rivulets running through the lower part of image. The whole nebula is about 130 light years across. To get the black & white image, I used a filter that only lets a narrow range of light through - in this case only light emitted by hydrogen alpha atoms that are energized by the stars in the nebula.

Photographed from my light polluted driveway in Arlington.

Description: Added 3 hours of OIII and proceeded to tweak and play. My camera rotation did not match the Ha, so I ended up cropping this image down. It was also fairly noisy - my OIII conditions were not optimal (moon up, probably overstretched, etc) - but in the end I liked the warm/cool colors this produced and the illusion of depth.
