Description

Messier 94 defies all expectations. Unlike most large galaxies, M94 is missing a diverse neighborhood of satellite galaxies. Only two very small galaxies have been detected nearby. Even more mysterious, M94 appears to have very little, if any, dark matter, which is believed to be a fundamental ingredient in galaxy formation. The missing dark matter was discovered by examining M94's galaxy rotation curve. Visible in this image, a bright blue ring of young stars accompanied by areas of red hydrogen alpha reveal an active star forming region surrounding the galaxy's core. Far beyond lies a fainter halo of stars, gas, and dust. This image was recently captured with two telescopes over several nights when M94 was near zenith.
