Description

This object is a Seyfert spiral galaxy located 60 million light years away in the constellation of Canes Venatici at a declination of +39 degrees.  It is a magnitude 11.5 galaxy which spans 6 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 100,000 light years.

The nickname of this object is the Eye of Sauron, from the Lord of the Rings.

We are viewing this galaxy about 30 degrees from face-on.  The structure is interesting – bluish core surrounded by yellow inner region, dust lanes swirling around the middle region, and bright star forming areas at each end of the outer disk.

I love the extended star stream from each arm.  The stream from the bottom arm extends down and to the right for about 150,000 light years.

Two other fascinating galaxies – NGC 4156 above left and UGC 7188 to the left – fill out the background.
