Description

The Andromeda Galaxy and its companion galaxies M32 (the larger of the two smaller) and M110 can be found in the constellation for which it is named, Andromeda. This large galaxy is approximately 2,500,000 light years away.  In terms of miles it would be 1.5 with 19 zeros following it which may not be of much help. This galaxy contains about a trillion stars. The national debt would amount to around $30 dollars for each star contained in the galaxy.  It is somewhere around 250,000 light years across. I had always wanted to photograph this galaxy as photographs by other amateurs have always inspired me. I am located in a Bortle 9 area, right in the heart of the city. I captured my data using a Meade Series 6000 refractor of 80/480 millimeters, and an Atik Horizon II mono with Astrodon filters. Amusingly, I autoguided using a 14" Meade LX200. This photograph would be my first of Messier 31, and also my first Ha-LRGB. It represents approximately 4 hours of Hydrogen Alpha and equal parts of 8 hours of 60 second  LRGB exposures. I rejected an unknown number of exposures marred by helicopters, airplanes, meteors, satellites, ufo's, and fireworks, etc. Due to nearby trees and a two story dwelling, I could only obtain a maximum of two hour sessions, some cut short by clouds. So, much of the credit should be heaped on my astronomy widow, Elizabeth, who enjoyed my absence on more than ten sessions. Some sessions ended between 1 and 3 a.m. after shooting calibration frames. Of Course my dog, Mellie, helped enormously by  keeping me both company and awake.
