Description

Moretus Crater is the main formation of this southern polar region.

It can be seen here on the left in the image.

It is a magnificent circular crater 114 km in diameter and 5000 m deep. The enclosure dominates the surrounding rugged terrain by more than 2000 m.

The central mountain, 2,700 m high and with slopes of no more than 30 degrees, is the highest mountain of all lunar craters.

The inner side of the enclosure is in tiers.

The proximity of the terminator gives a part of relief immersed in a semi-darkness a ghostly appearance.
