Description

NGC 1084 is a barless spiral galaxy roughly 63 million light years away in the constellation of Eridanus.  It measures only 2.8' x 1.4' but has a relatively high magnitude of 10.7, giving it an overall surface brightness of 11.9 - about as bright as it gets for a non-elliptical galaxy.  Even modest telescopes with sufficient focal length should be able to pick out several details in this interesting object, making it's current lack of popularity as an astrophotography target somewhat surprising.

NGC 1084 has been home to 5 recorded supernovae events in the past half century, the most recent one being a magnitude 14.5 explosion in 2012.
