Description

This was my first effort at the Orion Nebula with my 'new for old' autoguider. I should apologise in advance for this over-sharpened, -saturated, -rated and messy image complete with dust motes...like you never want to see it...but it was my first, and I was so excited at the time!

I restored my 1989 LX5 in May 2019, with a refurbished gearbox, DIY autoguider and second hand Meade DSI-II C OSC, and adapted an old 8x50 finder scope to be a 'finder-guider' together with a second hand Orion Starshoot autoguiding camera.

I had also just come across Ivo Jaeger's amazing Startools, and this was my first attempt at layering images to mask a burned out core. With all its imperfections, it showed what is possible with an old scope with a state of the art long exposure (LX) drive for astrophotography (back in 1989).

I never got results like this, even with piggy back photography using an old SLR, by the time I had bumped the guiding eyepiece, usually by falling asleep! I'm sure all astrophotographers from this era have a mark on their foreheads to remind them of the 'fun we endured'...
