Description

This Astrobin Debut Object, also known as NGC 6052, is an irregular galaxy located 230 million light years away in the constellation of Hercules at a declination of +21 degrees. This magnitude 13 object spans 45 arc-seconds in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 55,000 light years.

In his Arp catalog, Dr. Arp classified this object into the obscurely named category of Galaxies with Irregularities, Absorption and Resolution. This is an object which was worthy of its inclusion by Dr. Arp into his peculiar galaxy catalog.

What a wonderful mess this one is! As always, the Hubble image of the mouseover is most useful in understanding this object. Still, chaos reigns. This object has been described as a Late Stage Merger of 2 galaxies, which makes sense to me, but I haven’t been able to find the scientific evidence which supports this claim.

I was puzzled by the diverse colors (whites, blues, oranges, and purples) seen in my image, but they seem to be consistent with the nature of the Hubble image.
