Description

IC405 is both an emission and reflection nebula, and is relatively large at 30 arc minutes across.  The bright star to the center right is AE Aurigae, a 6th magnitude O-type variable.   AE Aurigae shares an unusual property with another O-type star, Mu Columbae, in that they are racing in opposite directions at 230,000 miles per hour.  If we trace their paths backwards, they meet in the area of Orion's belt some 2.5 million years ago, indicating they were ejected from the region (perhaps by passing close to another star).

AE Aurigae is now passing through a cloud of interstellar gas, where its high energy is ionizing the molecules and illuminating an emission nebula.

For this image I combined RGB data (30x120 seconds R, 30x60 seconds G and B), with 20x300 seconds each of Ha, OIII, and SII.  I added the narrowband data in an HSO palette, with Ha in red, SII in green and OIII in blue.  The SII data showed the most structure, so adding it in green to the red Ha data gave nice yellow highlights, which I thought enhanced the "flame" look.
